What to Expect for an X-Ray Exam

Before an X-ray Exam

  • Depending on the type of X-ray required, your doctor or nurse may provide you with specific instructions.
  • You may be asked to wear a gown during the exam, depending on which area is being X-rayed.
  • You will be asked to remove jewellery, eyeglasses, and any metal objects because they can show up on an X-ray.
  • Female patients should inform the X-ray staff if they are pregnant or suspect that they may be pregnant.

During an X-ray Exam

  • The X-ray machine produces a safe level of radiation that passes through your body and records an image on a specialized plate.
  • A radiographer positions your body to obtain the necessary views. He or she may use pillows to help you hold the position.
  • During the X-ray exposure, you remain still and sometimes hold your breath to avoid moving so that the image is not blur.
  • The X-ray procedure may take between 5 – 10 minutes for a simple X-ray or longer for examinations involving multiple regions.

After an X-ray Exam

  • After an X-ray scan, generally you can resume normal activities.
  • Your X-ray scan needs to be studied by a radiologist. A full report will be sent to the doctor who arranged the scan, who will discuss the results with you.
  • It usually takes 1 day for the results of an X-ray scan to come through unless they’re needed urgently.
